Old Age and Snoring

Snoring is the creation of unpleasing noises during the night while sleeping that is caused due to obstruction of the free flow of the air passages. The obstructed passage is in the region pertaining to the back of the mouth and the nose, and the proper flow of the air is not allowed during breathing process. The collapsible spot is where the upper throat and the tongue meet are the uvula and the soft plate which vibrates creating noise. Snoring occurs when these soft tissues strike against each other with the flow of air and causes noisy vibrations.

Snoring can sometimes be a moderate problem or it can be considered a very serious problem. Snoring may cause several disorders and it can affect women during the pregnancy. It is directly related to causing sleepless nights and making a person become very irritable during the day due to sleep deprivation. Snoring can also be in the dire zones of sleep apnea, and this could call for a sleep specialist.

Some of the physical reasons for snoring are structural and may be due to narrow jaws, enlarged tongue, or tonsils, enlarged adenoids, a more than normal thick soft palate, a crooked septum or even small nasal passages can cause of snoring. Sometimes, dental implants can also on occasions start snoring issues and a physician or sleep specialist should be consulted if any of these causes are directly snoring related. We all change with age while some of us, so with age, physical problems are able to exacerbate over time into bigger physical issues and eventually cause physical snoring issues.

As we get older and physically change occur that may become a problem with snoring over time, because of muscles of tongue, soft tissues of the back nose and throat area becoming softer and more relaxed overall. As these muscles become weaker with age, the snoring can be more frequent and even overtime move into the danger zone of one of the three main sleep apnea stages that can cause very serious medical concerns for eventual deterioration of your health and wellbeing.

There are some major snoring factors are directly to outside causes and affect the individual, but can also be controlled. These are issues with allergies and sinus problems, consumption of alcohol, sedatives, and excessive or even regular smoking, are all major factors in the disruption of normal sleep patterns that can eventually lead to snoring over time. These factors decrease the lung capacities and directly cause irregular breathing. This is especially true for those who continue with poor health habits even as they age.

Snoring which is extremely loud and then suddenly stops with broken up frequent episodes of short silence to only start again is known as sleep apnea. Very serious episodes can last up to ten seconds and can occur more than seven times per hour. People who are affected with sleep apnea experience such serious episodes from 30 to 300 times per a night. These issues are to be taken very seriously because they are directly tied in with elevated blood pressures and even enlargement of heart may occur. Sleep apnea can become worse with age and are to be discussed with a physician, because of the direct health damage over time.

Relationships between Food and Snoring

When trying to find a solution to your snoring, this process is a matter of trial and error. Snoring is a health problem that there is no blanket product or solution, and what may work for one person does not always work for another. Make sure to note some of the most obvious visible factors, such as obesity and smoking, which are shown to directly contribute to the problem of snoring. But even with the obvious factors, there are also overlooked or hidden factors in the battle to stop snoring. One well hidden factor is directly related to the diet of the person who has snoring problems - the consumption of dairy products.

The consumption of dairy products is known to increase mucous production and can be a contributing factor to snoring, during the night. It is this extra mucous that restricts the air passages intensifying your snoring problem or even be the exact cause of your nightly snoring. For those who still think that a warm glass of milk before bedtime, may want to choose another warm drink, like apple cider or herbal cup of tea to relax before sleeping.

In fact, no dairy products before bed include certain food products such as cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese and ice creams, because they all can have the same mucus producing effect. So if you want to know remove the direct link to your snoring, don't consume dairy products for a trial period of two or three weeks to see if it helps in reducing your snoring.

If dairy products do have an effect on snoring, do not panic or completely drop your daily dairy requirements. There are several alternatives to cow's milk (such as soy milk or rice milk) and numinous dairy free types of cheeses, yogurts, ice cream products, etc. that will help you to reduce or stop the snoring dilemma. The closer to your bedtime, the less of dairy products should you have, for avoiding a night free from snoring.

Another snoring contributor outside of dairy products is rich or fatty meal eaten late at night. For many reasons including snoring it is important to avoid eating large meals close to bedtime. Certain foods cause inflammation of the digestive linings and air passages that will contribute to snoring. To help in figuring out your food enemies, it would be useful to keep a food diary and recording what you have eaten during the day. This is a very productive way to link this information with the severity of your snoring during the night.

No matter what your end results of linking foods and snoring, it is always important to use the most nutritious substitutes so to always be eating a daily balanced diet. There are many ways to study and replace certain foods that are may be the culprits of your snoring. Discussing your daily food substitute intake can be easily resolved with help from a professional nutritionist. This is especially important with dairy products that are our main calcium providers.

There are several reasons due to which people snore from time to time. Most of the time, the minor snoring can be eliminated without too many worries or efforts to resolve. But, if you are beyond the occasional minor snoring and are dealing with a heavier snoring – the symptoms just before the serious issue of sleep apnea, then serious measures need to be taken. During snoring episodes, the oxygen flow to the brain is being interrupted. The more interruptions of air flow that happens, the more you will be awakened throughout the night. No matter what level of snoring you have, it is very important to resolve the problem for yourself and your loved ones. Sleep deprivation will over a very short period of time, cause problems with normal everyday health and body functioning. When snoring continues over a long period, you tend to miss a lot on restful sleep leading to other health risks. One of first steps to take when snoring becomes a problem is to avoid all alcoholic beverages and any other types of depressants or sedatives that would directly have any effect upon the body's central nervous system. If you do have an occasional alcoholic beverage, make sure that it is consumed several hours before going to bed, not right before bed time, and limit any alcohol consumption to only one or two drinks.

By changing some of the ways you lay in bed when sleeping, can make a difference in your snoring problem. Use a few extra pillows to slightly raise your upper body. Raise the top head area of your bed with some bricks or boards between the mattress and frame section to change the level. Do not lay flat on your back while sleeping but lay on your side instead. If there are problems staying in that position throughout the night, hold a thick pillow next to you for help in staying on your side. Since sleeping on your back or in a flat level position can contribute to direct obstruction of your air flow, these are ways to lesson the obstruction of the air passages.

Your snoring partners can damages your health

It’s well known that snoring may damage your health but new study of the effect of noise on sleep has found that a snoring partner can raise a sleep partner’s blood pressure by as much as a low-flying aircraft.
Scientists who monitored 140 volunteers in their homes near of four European airports found the noises penetrating the bedroom had the same effect as those emanating from the neighboring pillow.
Blood pressure went up in direct relation to noise loudness, by 0.66 mm Hg for every five-decibel increase, the researchers say in the European Heart Journal. The type of sound or its origin did not appear to be important. It was only the sound volume that mattered.
Lars Jarup, an author of the study from Imperial College London, said: "We know that noise from air traffic can be a source of irritation, but research shows that it can also be damaging for people's health. This is particularly significant in the light of plans to expand international airports."
He added: "Our studies show night-time aircraft noise can affect blood pressure instantly and increase the risk of hypertension."
People with high blood pressure (hypertension) have an increased risk of developing heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and dementia. High blood pressure is defined by World Health Organization as being 140/90mmHg or more.
